Rampage

Remakes, sequels and Kevin Hart have most recently defined the success that is, Dwayne ‘The Rock” Johnson so why not take on a video game reboot next right?

I mean The Rock can do no wrong as he’s the most in demand action hero today, coming a long way from his first video game disaster film, Doom (it was a disaster, not that it was a disaster type of film) to take on Rampage with far better success in comparison this time around.

However, that film, Doom, was really, really bad and there was only one way to go from there… so yes far better this time around.

Rampage was first brought to the American conscious in the 80s as an arcade game where you choose between a giant albino gorilla, a flying werewolf or mutated alligator. The goal? To destroy as much as a major city as possible while not being blown to bits by the barrage of misses and gun fire from the military below.

Damn, just gave the away the film…. Well … uhh… there’s a lot of CGI, the Rock is charismatic as usual, so much so even animals love him and there’s this pretty interesting 5 minute intro scene (think Life) that brings the plot and origin of the mutated creatures into perspective but that’s about it.

Stale acting by the supporting roles with character motivations that swing back and forth depending on the need of the script felt boring and often times stupid.

And please Hollywood, next time you can’t figure out how to end a film with a believable resolution just put in text “we couldn’t figure out this part but the grand finale is done. Not sure what to do with the Ape or the rest of the story for that matter… the End.”

At least in that way as a viewer I don’t feel my level of intelligence is being insulted on your end.

Anyhow, for the arcade action geeks the nostalgia of it all may be enough for you. Good film Rampage is not, but in terms of summer popcorn flicks I’d say barely watchable but acceptable if needing to find an air conditioned place to hang out for a few hours or like me, just trying to get the most bang for my buck with the movie pass card.

In short, do almost anything else then spend money to watch this film.

RampWay better than Pacific Rim Rising, a tad behind King Kong Skull Island and far worse than Pacific Rim or Godzilla.
