This is honestly just a silly movie. What if we combined ET and Jurassic Park, or changed out the Upside down world in Stranger things with dinosaurs instead. Silly but it was quite entertaining because in the end it’s a survival story and within that story are Ewan McGregor and Anne Hathaway who are really charismatic actors, looking quite smelt in their 1980’s wardrobe as they try and save their family from prehistoric dangers in the End of Oak Street.
It’s a typical, family friendly suburbia life in Flowervale, Michigan with block parties, PG-kid games of course hot dogs on the barbeque, but that’s all a façade for the Platt family as Denise (Hathaway) and Greg (McGregor) are on the verge of divorce and their kids are typical awkward loners.
Nothing is as it seems especially when one night a blast of light without reasoning or motivation, occurs late one night, merging the entire town with the prehistoric one that came millions of years before.
Of course no one knows what’s happening at first, which is the fun of the film as the Platt family, residents and annoying neighbors all discover something is quite different on this day and that they’re now on the lower part of the food chain and with that, this film doesn’t hold back any punches.
Everyone is in peril here and it doesn’t matter if you’re an elder adult, family or child you will get killed and eaten if you don’t run fast enough… well, kind of. But that’s the basis behind this entire film, Survive. Jurassic Park has come to the suburbs. What do you do?
The two leads, Hathaway and McGregor are great in their roles as providing emotional strength with their kids, while also bickering and hassling with one another until the true theme of the film comes through… family. Because to survive such an ordeal the family will need to come together and work with each to find away out or back from where they came from?
I wont go into too much detail but Hollywood is quickly encroaching on a played out, get out of jail free card … a once cool but becoming quickly passé gimmick over the pass few years.
But I have to admit. It was fun and rarely did the Platt family not catch my attention, including the kids their dog Starbuck.
So if you ever want to know what life would look like if dinosaurs roamed the States again, then The End of Oak street is what you’re looking for…a ridiculous survival film that can get you through the dog days of August.
